Branding and Personal Identity in Graphic Design and Media

I struggle to network and create a personal brand that would put me on a competitive advantage and be seen in ways that could lead to more opportunity. And in the fast-paced realm of graphic design and media, the concepts of branding and personal identity systems work with each other in a symbiotic relationship and it turns to be more crucial than ever. Establishing a unique and memorable identity is both a challenge and a necessity for success.

Everyone seeks authenticity and innovation, which many can achieve with years of experience under their belt, so can the newbies come into the field and change the game with their creative aspirations or do they only have what they know and see? (like me). Because in todays world personal branding isn't just showcasing skills, but it showcases a story and how you perceive yourself and the field you are in. Always pushing to answer questions like, what sets you apart from other designers? How can you show passion and skills through your work? Are you a memorable applicant/designer based upon your work?

Take Nike, for example. Beyond its iconic swoosh logo and overpriced athletic gear, Nike has cultivated a powerful brand identity centered around the slogan of "Just Do It." by personifying perseverance and empowerment. Similarly, Apple has built its brand on a foundation of innovation, simplicity, and design excellence. When you think of Apple, what comes to mind? Sleek designs? Security? High Prices? Quality Product? Powerful Technology? The brand Identity is reinforced by its products, so how can designers reinforce their identity with their designs and deliverables that can resonate with employers and everyone in the industry.  Forbes hits on this in their article(s) saying that, "Brand identity is not just about what a company thinks it is, but more importantly, it's about how consumers perceive and interact with the brand"

“Marketers require a framework that unravels the alchemy of brand and unlocks the blend of art and science in marketing. It’s where reports like this can be foundational, providing marketers a roadmap they can follow to ‘wash, rinse, and repeat’ strategies to build strong brand with remarkable results.”

- Peggy Anne Salz, Forbes

Although there are plenty of industry standards and baselines that everyone meets, designers can reinforce their identity in several ways;

  • Consistent Visual Branding: Establishing consistency with using consistent color schemes, typography, imagery styles, and graphic elements across all design materials, from logos and websites to social media and professional documents.

  • Distinctive Logo Design: The logo is often the most recognizable element of a brand. Designers should ensure that the logo reflects the brand's personality, values, and target audience. A well-designed logo should be memorable, versatile, and you.

  • Unique Design Elements: Incorporating unique design elements can help set a brand apart from competitors.

  • User Experience (UX) Design: UX design plays a significant role in shaping how users perceive a brand. By designing intuitive and enjoyable user experiences across digital platforms, designers can enhance their brand identity. Myself, I aim to make my website visibly pleasing, as well as physically enjoyable to navigate with ease.
