Navigating Freelance as a Graphic Designer
Younger designers that are fresh out of college, like myself, are stepping into the daunting world of Graphic Design where there could be opportunity left and right. However, there is also competition everywhere around us. There is a challenge of attempting to build our own repertoire as well as developing as a professional so that we can have those advantages going into our careers.
Freelancing is a versatile way for designers to ply their trade outside the confines of traditional employment, or even a way to get into emplyment. Working independently on a project-by-project basis for various clients, although not a requirement, but can be quite beneficial for oneself and their own professional development. At its core, freelancing in graphic design encompasses a wide range of services, including logo design, branding, web design, print collateral, digital illustrations, and more. Freelancers may work with individuals, small businesses, startups, or even larger corporations, depending on their niche and expertise. Freelance provides autonomy, meaning that freelancers have flexibility (wherein negotiated for it to be possible) to work from anywhere, whether its a home officer, a space, or in your own room. It's an appealing value considering recent years with COVID-19, remote work, and the type of field Graphic Design is in. Freelance also allows designers to take ownership of their own careers, pursue projects that align with passions and their niche, and continually grow and evolve as professionals.
So, after hearing all of these types of points, what does each actually mean? What is the purpose and how can it be conveyed in a professional way? Well;
1. Calendar Management:
Organizing your schedule is crucial for freelance success. Designe Chris Do says, “Your calendar is your boss.” Use tools like Google Calendar or project management apps to schedule tasks, deadlines, and client meetings. Setting aside specific time blocks for different projects helps maintain focus and ensures timely delivery for your deliverables.
2. Define Work Hours:
Establishing clear work hours is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Communicate your availability to clients and stick to your schedule to avoid burnout and maintain productivity. Everyone has family, friends, a social life, and so on. But with freelance there is a responsibility of prioritization of your client and honest work hours first when this is the only source of work.
3. Marketing Yourself:
In the competitive world of graphic design, effective self-promotion is key (also as stated in my prior blog post Branding and Personal Identity in Graphic Design and Media) Seth Godin, a former dot.com business executive emphasizes the importance of building a personal brand: “People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories, and magic.” Utilize social media, online portfolios, and networking events to showcase your work and attract potential clients.
4. Professional Planning:
Lastly, approaching a freelance career with a strategic mindset. Tim Ferriss emphasizes the importance of planning saying that, “Focus on being productive instead of busy.” Set realistic goals, track your progress with SMART goals, and adapt your strategies as needed to achieve success in your graphic design endeavors. Engaging in freelance work instills an entrepreneurial mindset in designers. They learn to think strategically about their careers, set goals, and seek out opportunities for growth and advancement. This entrepreneurial spirit not only drives their freelance endeavors but also prepares them for potential jobs or leadership roles in the future.
5. Managing feedback:
Learning how to manage feedback is crucial. Not only will you hear it from your clients, you will hear it from your peers, your boss's, and lastly yourself. Managing feedback effectively is a vital skill for freelance graphic designers. By staying open-minded, clarifying expectations, establishing a feedback process, separating personal from professional, asking for specifics, offering solutions, setting boundaries, and maintaining professionalism, freelancers can navigate feedback with confidence and professionalism, ultimately delivering exceptional results for their clients.
